Music at Rosslyn Hill Chapel
Director of Music and Choir Director: John Evans
Music has always been a big part of life at the chapel. We are extremely lucky to have a Steinway D concert grand, fully and expertly refurbished by Leverett & Son in 2018. All who play it fall in love with it! The chapel also has a 3 manual Matthew Copley pipe organ, with fully mechanical action, built in 1995.
We have two choirs; the Rosslyn Hill Chapel Choir, and the Rosslyn Hill Singers, a professional quartet, each of whom sing regularly in Sunday morning services.
The chapel has been used for many years for recordings by great artists due to its sweet acoustic; Hyperion and other labels used it for many years, and if you look on many CD inlays you’ll notice us there. Jacqueline du Pré, who lived around the corner, and Benjamin Britten practised here, among others.
Rosslyn Hill Chapel Choir
The Chapel Choir meets every Wednesday evening during term time from 7.30–9.30pm, and provides the music for nine Sunday morning services a year (roughly, once a month during term time). We sing a variety of choral music, ranging from polyphony to spirituals, and for the most important services we are joined by top professional soloists and instrumentalists.
We are completely un-auditioned, and there is a wide variety of choral experience in our ranks. Although we work from printed scores, reading music is not a pre-requisite for joining the choir: several of our members have learned to read music by being in the choir. We are a very sociable bunch and enjoy meeting new people.
We're always keen to welcome new members to the Choir. Try us out - the first few rehearsals are free, after which fees apply each term.
