About the Event

An open-minded spirituality course adapted from the book ‘Hearing God in Poetry’ by Richard Harries. Led by Rev Winnie Gordon of Birmingham New Meeting Unitarian Church and Rev Kate Dean of Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel.

There is a poem to read each day from 2nd March to 27 April and each week we will gather to share our favourite poems from the book or elsewhere and to discuss our inner journey through the season of Lent. We suggest that you obtain a copy of the book to read along with us but we have alternative options if you prefer not to.

Quotations from some of the poems:

‘We shall no cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time’ T S Eliot

‘Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer utters itself. So, a woman will lift her head from the sieve of her hands and stare at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift.’ Carol Ann Duffy

‘An absece is how we become surer of what we want. Abercaug is not here now, but there. And there is the indefinable point.’ R S Thomas

‘Who am I? they mock me, these lonely questions of mine. Whoever I am, thou knowest, O God, I am thine.’ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
