Celebrating Black Lives: Lashana Lynch

As part of Rosslyn Hill Chapel's 'Celebrating Black Lives' series, this month we celebrate a British actress, Lashana Lynch.

Lashana Lynch, a British actress of Jamaican descent, has consistently used her platform to advocate for racial justice and authentic representation. In her groundbreaking role as Nomi, the first Black female 00 agent in the James Bond franchise's No Time to Die, Lynch emphasized the importance of portraying a character that resonates with Black audiences. She stated, "In every project I am part of, no matter the budget or genre, the Black experience that I'm presenting needs to be 100 per cent authentic" .

Lynch also participated in ear for eye, a film adaptation of Debbie Tucker Green's play that delves into the Black British experience and systemic racism. Discussing the film's relevance, she remarked on the fleeting nature of the momentum gained during the height of the BLM protests, emphasizing the need for sustained action: "It got very quickly raised to a hundred and then very slowly whittled back down... Because what’s worse than not much happening is nothing happening at all" .

“I searched for at least one moment in the script where Black audience members would nod their heads, tutting at the reality but glad to see their real life represented.”

Each month we mark the significant life of a person of colour as a positive statement and a contribution to redressing historical imbalances in our society. More profiles.
