New Year Reflections, 2021

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

Listen to Mustn’ts, child, listen to the Don’ts. Listen to the Shouldn’ts, the Impossibles, the Won’ts. Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me. Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

SHEL SILVERSTEIN

Some of you may know that I am a big fan of new years. Any opportunity to start again, turn over a new leaf, so to speak. In fact, taking the phrase literally, I remember spending a breaktime at my primary school with a friend, turning over all the leaves in the playground.

There are of course many new years in different cultures which occur at different times in the Western calendar, so we don’t always have to wait for January to make a new start. But there is something about emerging from the depths of winter, which beckons us on to a lighter, brighter and more uplifting way of being.

With our service theme this month of ‘imagination’ we are encouraged to use the amazing power of the mind to conjure new possibilities. And with 2020 behind us, we owe it to ourselves and each other to make the most of whatever opportunities this new year may bring.
